Beneficiaries of her work included the Breast Cancer Network Australia, St Vincent's Institute, Footscray Community Arts Centre, Mount Scopus College, Monash University and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute.

She founded the Western Bulldogs women's group - the Bulldog Belles - offering scholarships to young females from the western suburbs.

A mother of three sons, Mrs Smorgon was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2003 but continued in her extensive community work.

"Our hearts and sympathies are with David and his family at this time as we pay our respects to an outstanding lady, wonderful mother and devoted Bulldogs member," club CEO Campbell Rose said.

"She will leave a huge hole in the hearts of all who knew her."

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou also paid tribute, saying she was "a great friend to so many people across all levels of the football world".

Little's name came up immediately among political insiders Friday, when Saxton said he would step down at the end of his term in 2008. The former schoolteacher and real estate agent from Mount Holly has served 24 years in Congress and said he's decided to retire because of medical problems with prostate cancer and sciatica.

"It is an honor to be even mentioned to follow Congressman Jim Saxton to represent the people of the 3rd District," Little said in a prepared statement. He said he's discussing the possibility of running with friends and family. Little and his wife, Mary Lee, have children in high school and a congressional campaign would be very disruptive to the Surf City family, Little said.

Last week, Freeholder-Director John P. Kelly of Eagleswood immediately announced his intent to seek the nomination as Saxton's successor.

Thinking of spring training, Francoeur’s future

He's an exciting player who gives the game every ounce of his energy every time he takes the field. His natural ability and approach could make him a 30-30 man and an all-start for the Braves. Even if he's moved at a conservative pace, he should get his first taste of the big leagues by the end of 2006."

A couple of things jump out at us: Francoeur got his first taste of the big leagues long before the end of 2006. Hell, he'd already been on the cover of Sports Illustrated by late-summer 2005.

A 30-30 man? Where did that come from? He never stole more than 16 bases in a season in the minors, so to think he'd steal twice as many in the majors was unrealistic. His career high so far was last year's five, and stolen bases are never going to be a significant part of his game, nor do the Braves expect them to be.
