New lung disease clinic reaching out to current, former smokers

A new clinic at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is looking to help current and former smokers test for possible lung problems or disease in an effort to begin early detection and awareness about lung cancer. The weekly clinic, which opened Friday, also offers screenings for bronchitis, cardiovascular disease and oral cancers. It is the first clinic of its kind in Seattle dedicated to lung disease and prevention, said Dr. Jason Chien, a pulmonary and critical-care specialist at SCCA who directs the new clinic. He said more than 60 percent of lung cancer cases in Western Washington occur in former smokers.

Part 6: One woman’s story: Contemplating chemotherapy

Editor's note: The Montana Standard has asked health and fitness correspondent, Paula J. McGarvey who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2007 to share her own story. This is a continuation of stories Paula has shared with our readers over the last several months. The other stories have also been reposted online and are available at http://www.mtstandard.com/healthfitness/.By Paula J. McGarvey for The Montana Standard Jan. 17, 2008 Today I received the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments. Since early October I have gone to the local cancer center religiously every two weeks. There, I would be hooked up to an IV and infused with toxic drugs, whose mission was to seek out and destroy any rogue cancer cells that dared to linger in my body after surgery.I haven't felt such a sense of accomplishment and relief since giving birth to my first child after 17 hours of labor one summer evening back in 1993.

Letter: Editorial should’ve talked about victims of abortion

To quote the St. Cloud Times Editorial Board, The silence is deafening! Where is the local outpouring of compassion for victims? Or, heck, maybe people are just too darned busy this time of year to notice.

One could assume the board was referring to the cries of close to 50 million children aborted since 1973, but it was not. It had a much different agenda. (Hate crimes must not be tolerated, Dec. 10.)

Why werent there more than two individuals praying outside the St. Cloud Planned Parenthood offices at noon Jan. 22? That was the 35th anniversary of the infamous Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.

Where is the outrage? Why doesnt the Times do an in depth analysis of the multi-million-dollar Planned Parenthood operation? It is largely underregulated and many locations subscribe to a dont ask, dont tell policy.
