More support for lycopene's prostate benefits

Forty people took part in the new pilot study, which adds clinical data to an area previously lacking, according to the researchers in this month's Journal of Nutrition.Epidemiological evidence has suggested that tomato-based foods can protect men from prostate cancer. One study found that men eating four to five tomato based-dishes per week were 25 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer compared to men eating tomatoes only rarely. Such findings are boosting the lycopene market, with growth rates forecast at over 100 per cent by Frost and Sullivan, albeit from a low base of around €27m ($34m) in 2003.Researchers, led by Silke Schwarz from the University of Hohenheim, recruited the men with BPH but no signs of prostate cancer, and randomly assigned them to receive either daily lycopene supplements (15 mg, LycoVit, BASF) or placebo for six months.Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous swelling in the prostate gland of older men.

Farming should return to its roots

Research has shown that, in contrast to most supermarket meat, this beef contains more anti-oxidants including vitamin E, more iron and other minerals, more omega-3 fatty acids and more of the powerful anti-cancer compound known as conjugated linoleic acid.

As a result, it doesn't simply supply high-quality protein and other nutrients; It can actually help protect the body against heart disease, cancer and a host of other diseases.

The "commodity beef" that fills the supermarket chill cabinets fails to provide these health benefits. Yet this is the kind of beef western governments continue to support through their agricultural policies.

Where's the beef?

On any rational grounds, pasture-fed beef ought to be the norm in countries like Britain that have the climate to grow good grass.

ACTISECâ„¢ - Nutrition with taste

Fruit and vegetable powders can provide a positive contribution to a healthy diet. This is why Obipektin AG has developed a new product line, Actisec™, which guarantees a minimum content of phytonutrients. Actisec™ opens up a wide range of possible new applications.

Conscious consumers demand foods that not only taste good and look appealing, but are also healthy. That is why the market for health foods has grown significantly over the last years. Products that are quick and easy to prepare and contain a defined level of phytonutrients are demanded by the market. Obipektin AG has been a major contributor to this development for many years and, as a leading supplier for food-ingredients, the company is able to offer natural products with a standardised content of phytonutrients.
