Hillary Stuns--Four Theories

Mistakes Were Made! Frank Raines--Rhodes scholar, Harvard Law, Lazard Freres, potential future Treasury secretary, etc.--has blotted his copybook at Fannie Mae. (His bio has already ignominiously disappeared from its former spot on Fannie Mae's Web site.) But unlike other semi-disgraced executives, Raines has a chance to redeem himself. How? By giving back the absurdly plush retirement package ($1.4 million a year plus stock options worth an estimated $16 million or so, according to WaPo) he'll get for leading his taxpayer-aided company to a possible $9 billion accounting loss. I think that if Raines gave it back--gave it all back--it would be such a dramatic, atypical gesture he might become something of a folk hero, turning a defeat into a PR victory. It's not as if Raines and his family would starve if he gave up the millions--he'd still have the absurdly plush pay packages he received in prior years (e.g.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting.

I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK.

Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little?

Parents Spark Hugh Wilder to First of Many World Records

But the 2007 calendar year has proved to be his best yet. In June, Hugh established men's 60-64 world records in the 50 (31.46) and 100 (1:08.77) LCM back. At the South Carolina SCM Championships in November, he claimed both backstroke world records, and would later break each of them a second time. Staying healthy and injury-free has been a key factor in Wilder's swimming success thus far, along with a flexible career and supportive wife. "I've been blessed with good health, and I've been injury free, which I am so thankful for. I've got a very supportive wife as well. We met in college and she knew I was a swimmer, so she knew what I was going through," he added. Wilder currently teaches philosophy at the College of Charleston (S.C.), and his hours allow him to swim before work each morning.
