New Tech fan blog: 'Shake and Bake' cooking up great future with ...

In addition to Jordan and Harper, Christian Lacey from Archbishop Shaw chose Tech over offers from Tulane, UCF, and some of the state schools. Two early commitments came from the state of Texas in Houston Tuminello and Phillip Longino. Tuminello, a receiver from Gilmer chose Tech over Baylor and Longino, a tackle from Missouri City, chose Tech over Houston, UCF, and SMU. Nick Chartain, from Desire Street Academy, committed to Coach Dooley after receiving offers from Nebraska, Ole Miss, USM, and Tulane. Other Desire Street linemen considering Tech are Freddie Smooth and Lavar Edwards. Both players have offers from Oklahoma and Tulane, among others. Damaris Johnson from Destrehan remains a top target. The lightning-fast athlete really made his name known in the state playoffs, making other schools pay attention.

Don't treat the old and unhealthy

Obesity costs British taxpayers £pounds;7billion ($19.7b) a year. Overweight people are more likely to contract major diseases and to require replacement joint operations.

Meanwhile, £pounds;1.7 billion is spent treating diseases from smoking, such as lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema. The same sum is spent by the NHS on those with alcohol problems.

Out of 870 family and hospital doctors surveyed, almost 60 per cent said the NHS could not provide full healthcare to all, and that some individuals should pay for services.

OUTRAGEOUS

One in three said that the old should not be given free treatment if it was unlikely to do them good for long. Half felt that smokers should be denied a heart bypass, while a quarter believed that fat people should not get hip replacements.

Views: Going green; rude Packer fans; Voter ID

This must change before more lives are lost to obesity, type 2 diabetes and many other diseases.

Discrimination against the obese is our last socially acceptable form of discrimination. It is time for local insurance companies to take a stand against this obvious killer.

-- Dr. Michael J. Garren, Verona

Let free market work with public smoking

As children we are taught to resist peer pressure, that "everyone else is doing it" is not justification for us to do the same.

Yet Gov. Jim Doyle wants us to believe that since 22 other states have a smoking ban, Wisconsin ought to as well. If we expect our children to resist the herd mentality, we should expect the same of our Legislature on more substantive issues.

The governor cites massive public support as a reason for a ban, but this support exists largely on paper.
